Top or Side Access? Milk coolers can be accessed one of two ways: through the top or the side. Top-accessed milk coolers feature sliding doors on the top of the unit that can be opened and closed to access the milk inside. These milk cooler units require the consumer to be tall enough to reach over the top of the machine, so they are best for kitchens that service adults or older kids. Smaller children, on the other hand, can more easily access a side-access milk cooler. The hinged panels of these coolers fold down so that the milk is at a lower height that’s easy for younger children to reach.
Which Refrigeration Type? There are two common refrigeration types you must consider, as well. Forced-air refrigeration is the most popular type. It uses a series of fans to pass air over an evaporator coil, causing the temperature of the cabinet to drop. Alternatively, cold-wall evaporator systems run refrigerant through tubes throughout the unit to keep the interior chilled. The cooling components in cold-wall evaporator systems are significantly smaller than those in forced-air units, so cold-wall evaporator models will typically have more storage capacity.
